Objective: To identify the prevalence of menopausal syndrome and it possible risk factors among mongolian women.
Research design: This is a cross-sectional –population based study using the case control desing and women aged 45-55 years old were participated
Materials and methods: There 290 women randomly selected from all geograpical regions and data collection was done by survey methods.Fof the measurement of plasma FSH, PRL and E2, the Serono company, Serozyme1mashine; Cholestrol and Phosphorius by Hymalyzer 2000, and plasma tryglycerids and Catcium were tested by Myrecksids. The presence of menopausal symptoms were evalauated by WHO guidelines.
Results: The mean age of premenopausal, menopausal and postmenopausal women was 46.8, 49.2,and 50.5 respectively. There 65% of women, aged 40-44, were in premenopausal period whereas 74.4% of women aged above 50 were postmenopasal period (p=0.0001)..
The most common symptoms were observed in women with premenopausal period headache (63.6%) unstability of blood pressure (60.1%) anxiety (55.2%),and hot flashes (49.0%); in early menopausal stage, hypertensive disorders (64.3%) anxiety (56.3%), hot flashes (51.8%) sweating (44.6%), and in later stages of postmenopausal women more felt headache (68.6%) and algor (51.4%) respectively.. These differences were statistically significant (p=0.04).
In premenopasal women, the plasma levels of cholestrols,calcium, phosphorius and trygliserids were 4.8±1.5 mmol/L, 2.3±0.3 mmol/L 1.2±0.5 mmol/L and 5.2±1.1gr/L respectively. The hormone profiles of these women were FSH 19.1±15.7 IU/L, LH 10.3±11.8 IU/L, E2 0.1±0.1 nmol/L and PRL 221.6±71.8 nmol/L (p=0.001). In postmenopausal women, the plasma levels of cholestrols,calcium, phosphorius and trygliserids were 5.1±1.5 mmol/L, 2.3±0.3 mmol/L, 1.3±0.6 mmol/L, 5.4±1.2 gr/L and FSH 45.5±30.4 IU/L, LH 21.3±14.5 IU/L, E2 0.04±0.09 nmol/L and PRL 193.6±67.4 nmol/L (p=0.001).
Conclusions:
- The mean age of menopause among mongolian women is 48.24 ± 2.9 (p=0.001).
- The most of symptoms associated with menopause were forgetfulness, headache, lethargy, and hypertension.
In terms of biochemistry, increased levels of FSH / LH and decreased E2 level were main findings.
