Objective: To determine the main risk factors of this condition and identify possible preventions.
Research desings: The case control model was used for possible risk factors.
Materials and methods: There 351 newborns were studied and the Lubchenco LO, Hansman C, Boyd E growth curve was used to evaluate newborn growth rate and gestational age was defined by Ballard method. For the statistical analysis, 2x2 table and multivariate regression methods were applied.
Results: The newborns with significantly (OR=5.2) reduced growth retardation were born from teenage mothers when compared to mothers aged 20-34. and also mothers with lack of nutrition and poverty had a significant impact (OR =14) on growth retardation (P< 0.001).In view of mothers medical condition, the hypertensive disorder (OR=2.5) also has possible impact on foetal growth. There 31.9% and 12.4% of mothers who gave LBW and NBW infants had pregnancy late toxemia and when it was compared to normal mothers, the odds ratio was 3.3 (p<0.001) indicating significant impact of pregnancy toxemia on foetal growth retardation.
Conclusion: Maternal health condition and poor obstetrics outcom and bad habits and pregnancy complications tend to have negative impact on foetal growth.
