Абстракт

Objectives: To conduct review and meta-analysis of studies on maternal and neonatal mortality in Mongolia in order to identify studied and unstudied issues and develop recommendations

Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Materials and method: The list of 80 studies on maternal and neonatal mortality published during 1997-2007 was developed, which included 26 studies on maternal mortality and 54 studies on neonatal mortality.

Results: The average score of studies was 20.5, 26 studies (49%) received score above the average and 27 studies (51%) were scored below the average.
Maternal mortality ratio was 116 per 100 000 births (95% CI 90.0-141.0) and MMR shows trend to decline according to the results of the meta-analysis.
The comparison of eclampsia, hemorrhage, sepsis/infection and uterus rupture didn’t show significant difference in their contribution to the maternal mortality. However there was statistically significant difference between other causes of maternal mortality.
Leading causes of perinatal mortality are birth asphyxia (36.0%) and preterm births (31.4%). Infection (13.7%) and congenital malformations (11.9%) contribute to more cases of deaths than other causes (2.8%).

Conclusions: The results of quality assessment of studies on maternal and neonatal mortality indicated that most studies were at or below the average score. The meta-analysis of study results on maternal and neonatal mortality was limited due to the lack of required data.

  • Studies have been conducted with more focus on demographic and social determinants and causes of mortality, health facilities environment, infrastructure and issues related to reproductive health services.
  • There is lack of national level studies conducted on neonatal mortality.
  • Data was limited on delays and risk factors that contribute to maternal and neonatal deaths, accessibility and quality of services, and no studies were conducted on EmOC and ENC.
