Background: Prolactin is a peptid hormone, that acts in a cytokine-like manner and as an important regulator of the immune system. Prolactin levels peak during sleep and in the early morning. Levels can rise after exercise, meals, sexual intercourse, and minor surgical procedures. Hypersecretion of prolactin is more common than hyposecretion. Hyperprolactinemia is the most frequent abnormality of the anterior pituitary tumors.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine serum prolactin level in healthy women of reproductive age.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed comprising 425 healthy women of reproductive age group 18-35 (<20 n=76, 21-25 n=131, 26-30 n=92, 31-35 n=126). Blood samples were collected 4 times at different phases of menstrual cycle (early-follicular phase, late- follicular phase, ovulation and mid-luteal phase). Women were comparatively healthy, with normal menstrual cycle and body mass index (BMI). Serum prolactin level was determined by ELISA method (Eucardio lab kit). To evaluate prolactin normal menstrual phase
Results: The mean age and BMI of women were 26.33±5.2 and 22.35±2.95, respectively. The average day of menstrual cycle was 28.45±3.34. The mean serum prolactin level was 16.7±4.62 ng/ml in women of reproductive age (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Average prolactin level was 16.7±4.62 ng/ml. Variation of prolactin level was observed at different stages of menstrual cycle (p<0.05). There was no correlation among age groups and serum prolactin in all phases of menstrual cycle.
