Background: Ensuring the availability of modern contraceptive methods at health service delivery points (SDPs) is crucial in the provision of quality primary health care. In order to provide the basis for aggregating relevant regional and global level indicators, there is a need to conduct a survey to obtain data for the following country level indicators:

       a) Percentage of SDPs offering at least three modern methods;

       b) Percentage of SDPs that have experienced no stock out of the contraceptive methods offered to clients in the last 6 months.

Materials and methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study, representative sample of SDPs that provide modern contraceptive methods in all regions of Mongolia were selected for this study. A total of 208 SDPs comprised of government and NGO were randomly selected from all regions of the country. The total sample size for each category of SDPs was distributed among the regions based on probability proportionate to size scheme, where size refers to the number of health facilities by type in each region.

Results: The survey findings show that all of the facilities surveyed offer male condoms and great majority of them offer oral pills followed by injectables, IUDs and emergency pills. Female condom is the least offered family planning service. Sterilization for males and implants are not popular in Mongolia. Almost all the surveyed facilities have male condoms in the stock and the large proportion of the facilities was stocked with oral pills followed by injectables, IUDs and oral pills. “Ordered but not delivered” is the most common reason of facilities for not providing oral pills and injectables. “Stopped to be supplied” is the commonest reason for not providing the emergency pills which could be attributed to the fact that the emergency pills are being sold more by public markets. The reasons of stock out need special attention in the full stock of the modern contraceptives methods.

Conclusion: The overall findings of the survey showed that there has been successful achievement in sustainability of modern contraceptives to all levels of SDPs in Mongolia.
