Background: In the world, alcohol is the most common cause of liver diseases.
Managchenmo is a traditional Mongolian medicine functional liquor comprising
twelve crude compositions: Sus scrofa / cinis faecis /, Inula helenium L., Terminalia
chebula Retz., Melia toosendan Sieb, Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Lagotis integrifolia
(Willd.) Schischk, Gentiana barbata Froel, Moschus moschiferus, Bezoar Bovis,
Calcio sinteris, Carthamus tinctorius L, and Saccharum officinarum.
Objective: To investigate the effects of Managchenmo on alcohol-induced liver
injury in rats.
Methods: Fifteen Wistar rats, weighing 180-220 g were divided into three
groups of 5 rats in each, according to the following: Group 1 rats were fed with
normal standard diet for 2 weeks, group 2 rats - 3 mls of 30% ethanol and normal
standard fed only for 2 weeks, and group 3 rats - 3 mls of 30% ethanol and 100
mg/kg body weight of the extract of Managchenmo for 2 weeks.
After 2 weeks of treatment, all rats were sacrificed and total blood samples were
collected. Histological analysis of liver was underdone by hematoxylin and eosin.
The levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase
(AST), and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured according to the standard
procedure. An acute toxicity test was performed according to Prozorovskiy V.B
(1976) method. Each experimental value is expressed as the Mean ± SEM. Statistical
calculations of the data were performed using one way ANOVA analysis.
Results: The histopathological analysis implies that the administration of
Managchenmo extracts resulted in hepatoprotective role compared with that of
the model group. Levels of marker enzymes (AST, ALT and ALP) were evaluated in
serum. Managchenmo elicited significant hepatoprotective activity by attenuating
the ethanol-elevated levels of AST, ALT and ALP. The LD50 of this preparation was
14.1 g/kg.
Conclusion: The hepatoprotective effect of Managchenmo on ethanol-induced
hepatotoxicity in rats appears to be related to the inhibition of lipid peroxidation
