Uterine leiomyoma is a benign tumor, characterizing monoclonal cells of the smooth muscle of the uterus that originates from the mezynchime. During the course of its independent growth (autocrine mechanism) influenced by hereditary factors, new blood vessels (neoangiogenesis) develop.  During the pathogenesis of the tumor, hormone and immune regulations are lost further leading to sex hormone misbalance. Hence, cell apoptosis suppression process plays major role in the tumor development.

Although, leiomyoma is common, about 50% - 70% of the leiomyomas present with no signs and/or symptoms. Therefore, women do not seek medical care. However, most cases are detected when they are incidentally involved in medical examination. Therefore, it is impossible to accurately count the tumor cases.

Morbidity related to leiomyomas of the uterus not only affects women’s personal health, but it needs special attention, as it is becoming a socially affected disorder. Hence, it is an imperative issue, that during the course of preventative measures, risk factors and conditions, which will have negative effect on women’s health and quality of life, such as, social and living environment, stress, hormone treatment during pregnancy, women and their spouse’s sexual misconducts, sexually transmitted infections, abortion and surgical procedures performed on the uterus, should all be eradicated.
