Background: Although the advent of endoscopic technology is expanding to the pediatric general surgery practice, there has been no any case of the use of this technology in the pediatric patient in Mongolia. The purpose of this assessment was to review and present an opportunity of advent of the pediatric laparoscopic surgery in Mongolia.
Materials and methods: We selectively reviewed literature, guidelines, and recommendations related to the pediatric laparoscopy surgery. Also we assessed the thirdary level care hospital that provides pediatric surgery service in Mongolia.
Results: Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical technique in which in which operations in the abdomen is performed through small incisions (usually 0.5–1.5 cm) as opposed to the larger incisions needed in laparotomy. There are a number of advantages to pediatric patients with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure. These include reduced pain due to smaller incisions and hemorrhaging, and shorter recovery time etc. Therefore it has been introduced in many countries in the pediatric surgery practice and proofed to be both feasible and save.
In Mongolia, there are a number of pediatric patients who have surgical indications for the lapa- roscopic surgery. A laparoscopic surgery team, which consists of 4 pediatric surgeons, 3 anesthesi- ologists and 3 nurses from National Centre for Maternal and Child Health, is received long and short term trainings abroad and built the team’s confidence. However the team lacks special pediatric lapa- roscopic instruments. Moreover, a planning policy is lacking.
Conclusion: There is an urgent need to introduce and develop the pediatric laparoscopic surgery in Mongolia.
