Background: Asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy is an established risk for symptomatic urine tract infections, premature delivery, intrauterine growth retardation, endometritis and even fatality for mother and baby. By identification and appropriate treatment of patients at this stage, the complications in future can be prevented. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women in Mongolia.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2009-2011 among pregnant women between 12 and 16 weeks of gestation at antenatal clinics. Urine samples were taken from 699 patients. Тhe samples were tested with a reagent test strip for the presence of leukocyte esterase using dipstick analysis and the diagnosis was confirmed with urine culture. Treated patients were followed up after one week.

Results: Out of 699 pregnant women screened, 73 had definite asymptomatic bacteriuria giving an overall prevalence of 10.4%. The most common isolate was E.coli at 71.2% (52). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, the following risk factors were significantly associated with definite asymptomatic bacteriuria: living in rural areas (OR 2.5 95% CI 1.43-4.45) and in “gers” (OR 1.8 95% CI 1.01-3.14), history of urinary tract infection (OR 1.88 95% CI 1.04-3.36), suffering from constipation (OR 2.24 95% CI 1.23-4.08) and having pathological vaginal discharges (OR 3.28 95% CI 1.80-5.99).

Conclusions: This study supports the necessity of starting a routine screening for asymptomatic bacteriuria during first antenatal care visit.
