Background: The role of medication and antimicrobial drugs use control is important with increased emphasis on control of patient safety. The purpose of this review was to estimate inpatient medication and antimicrobial drugs use at the National Center for Maternal and Child Health.
Materials and methods: The annual statistical reports and pharmacy records of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health between 2006 and 2010 were reviewed.
Results: Costs and use of medication and antimicrobial agents were reviewed. The average inpatient costs were 53688 tugrik per patient/day of which 68.2% (36625 tugrik) was used for medication. There was marked variation among hospitals in use of specific antimicrobial agents. The antibiotics accounted for 66% of the total cost of inpatient costs.
Conclusions: This review serves as a starting point in developing national estimates of inpatient maternal and pediatric medication use.
