Background: Preterm birth represents a major problem for modern obstetrics due to its increasing frequency and the accompanying neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although several maternal characteristics related to preterm birth have been identified, the etiology in most cases remains inadequately understood. The purpose of the study was to compare the incidence of birth canal pathogens among women with preterm and term labors and to determine antibiotic sensitivities of colonized agents.

Materials and methods: In this study, we enrolled 40 women in each preterm and term deliveries group. We sampled for bacteriological culture the cervical canal of the subjects.

Results: Patogens in birth canal are colonized in 33 (82.5%) women with preterm delivery, whereas in 15 (37.5%) women with term labors (OR=7.86; p<0.001). The incidences of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans are more prevalent in the case group to compare that of women delivering within normal timeframe. The Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are more sensitive to cefazolin, cefotaxime and resistant to other antibiotics, Streptococcus aglactiae is more sensitive to cefazolin, cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin and resistant to other antibiotics. The Staphylococcus coagulase is sensitive to ciprofloxacin and resistant to other antibiotics.

Conclusion: The results of this study support that the bacterial infection of birth canal was associated with preterm delivery. The colonized agents were sensitive to antibiotics of the cefalosphorin group.
