Objectives: To determine neonatal mortality rate and its causes in the capital city.
Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of neonatal deaths in Ulaanbaatar, during three years period from 2004 to 2006.
Results: There were 650 neonatal deaths during the study period and NMR was 11.33. Three-quarters of the neonatal deaths occured in the first week of life and more than half (63.2%) were preterm. The most common cause of neonatal deaths was birth asphyxia (38,62%), followed by severe infections (20,62 %), congenital malformations (18,00%) and preterm birth (12,77%).
Conclusion: Early neonatal mortality is high in Ulaanbaatar. Birth asphyxia, infection and congenital malformations were the most common causes of neonatal mortality. Mostly neonatal deaths occurred among preterm babies.
