Objective: To gather baseline data on disability and mental retardation among school-age children of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Study design: This study consisted of two parts: a secondary data review and a survey of “special” school students in Ulaanbaatar

Materials and methods: Data were collected during 3 months from December 2005 to March 2006 in Ulaanbaatar. The researchers visited to the secondary schools and 6 “special” schools and all eligible school-age children were recruited in the survey. Data was analyzed using STATA 7 software and explorative variables were reported as percentages.

Results: In Ulaanbaatar, there are 186186 students in the 193 secondary schools. 17223 were reported with a disability giving an overall rate of 92.5/1000. The most prevalent disabilities were visual disability (54.3/1000),  followed by locomotor disability (6.1/1000) and hearing (17.6/1000).  Mental retardation was the most common disabling condition (75.3%) among “special” school children.

Conclusions: The prevalence of disabilities among school aged children is still high. This has major implications for health, rehabilitation, welfare and educational services. These implications must be addressed in order to develop appropriate rehabilitation services for children.
