Gallbladder disease is becoming increasingly prevalent in Western countries and is a common cause of hospitalization. But not known studied the true prevalence in Mongolia. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of cholelithiasis and to compare the results of ultrasonographic screening of foreign researchers. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of gallstone disease (gallstone or cholecystectomy) in a hospital based sample of the adult population in Mongolia. A total of 9246 patients were enrolled in this study and 5145 (55.6%) were women and 4101 (44.4%) were men. Their mean age was 51.5 ±12.3 (range 20-84). Each subject recieved a questionnaire and underwent to an upper abdominal ultrasound examination. The overall prevalence of gallstone disease was 5.1%. Prevalence was higher in women (6.7%) than in men 3.1% (p=0.001), constituting male to female ratio 1:3.3. The peak age group for the occurrence of gallstones in both sexes were in 40-59 years. The prevalence of cholelithiasis in Mongolia was near to a Russia (Siberia), Bangladesh and Taiwan.
