STANDARDIZATION OF CHINESE MEDICINE, TRENDS IN HONG KONG
( Тойм өгүүлэл )

Абстракт
Hong Kong has been an importantentrepot of Chinese Materia Medica (CMM)since the
18th century. However, the Government uses a‘laissez-faire’ policy on the use of
CMMs. With the increasing global popularity of CMM productsand recognition of
Hong Kong’simportant rolein CMM trading, the Hong Kong Government sees the
potential to develop Hong Kong as an international Traditional Chinese
Medicine(TCM) centre. Thus, there is a demand todevelop a standard for CMM and to
regulate CMM products in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica
Standard (HKCMMS) was launched in 2002 to develop identification methods to
ensure the safety and quality of CMMs and 200 CMM monographs would be
completed by 2013.
In this presentation, webriefly review the following: (1) the historical backgroundsand
currentTCM regulations in Hong Kong, (2) the features of HKCMMS and other
researches on standardization of CMMs, and(3) current trendon linking up biological
activity and chemical profile in establishing the better quality standards.Thiswould
provide an overall pictureon development of CMM standards and related regulations in
Hong Kong and current trends in TCM research. We hope that more sharing of
experiences in developing standards for herbs would lead to more harmonized
standards around the world. This would be very important to the development and
modernization of traditional medicines.
