Purpose: Our goal was to detect the types of impactions of third molars, to report a guidelines for the surgical removal.
Materials and methods: We used 500 panoramic X-rays. We measured the difficulty index of third molar extraction using a Pedersen's classification.
Results: The impaction of third molars was 16.2%. Upper third molars: mesioangular impaction 17.4%, horizontal 17,4%, vertical 17,4%, distoangular 47,8% . Depth level A-21.7%, B-34.8%,C-43.5%. Mandibular third molars: mesioangular impaction 54.3%, horizontal 23.4% vertical 21.3%, distoangular 1,1% .Depth level A 57.4% , B 34.0% , C 8.5%. Ramus relationship: class I 54.1%, class II 30.9%, class III 17.0%.
Difficulty index: minimal difficulty and moderately difficulty were 44.7% and 51.1%. Very difficulty
was 4.3 %.
Conclutions: These results indicate that for removal of minimal or moderately difficult impacted third molars can use local anesthesia , and ambulatory general anesthesia is appropriate choice for very difficult impaction.
