Objective: To determine newborn and infant mortality rate and identify mortality cause
Material and Method: 1273 patients, who were under 1 years old and were treated in MCHRC during 2004-2006 years, were included in this retrospective study.
Results: Perinatal mortality rates per 1000 live births were in 2004-28.7, in 2005-24.2, in 2006 -30, in 2007 - 23.8, in first 10 months of 2008 -24.5 in Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic of MCHRC. The cause of newborn mortality was different in Delivery room, due to birth weight. The main causes of absolutely low birth weight or under 1000 gr. weight newborns mortality were encephalopathy and brain hemorrhage. The main causes of extremely low birth weight or 1000-1499 gr. weight newborns mortality was pneumopathy and for newborns with low birth weight under 2500 gr were congenital malformation and asphyxia. There were declining trend of infant mortality rate between 2004-2007 years in the Pediatrician Internal and Surgery clinics of MCHRC. But in 2008 infant mortality rate was increased. 456 infants died during 2004-2008 years in the Pediatrician Internal and Surgery clinics of MCHRC. The main cause of deaths was sepsis.
Conclusion: One year of age or younger children mortality rates were decreased in 2004-2007, but in 2008 was increased in MCHRC. Infant mortality mainly was caused by pneumonia 23.8% and by neurological diseases 23.0%. 65.6% of infant mortality related to the newborns. The main 3 causes of newborns mortality were infections 43%, encephalopathy 19%, and congenital malformation 11%. The main causes of deaths for early neonatal period were asphyxia, conditions due to premature, congenital malformations and infections. Cases of misdiagnosis in MCHRC were 0.9% less than national mean.
