AIM
Determine the pituitary thyroid gland axis function abnormalities and compare it with region.
METHOD
We enrolled 666 elderly subjects from UB city, Orkhon aimag, Dornogovi aimag, Khentii aimag and Khovd aimag. Serum T3, T4, total TSH hormones level were conducted by ELISA. All data were captured by SPSS 19.0, MS Excel 2007 program in which mean variables, One way Anova test, bivariate correlations and linear regression are included.
RESULT
A total of 666 elder subjects, male 28.5%, female 71.5% and mean age 68.2±8.6. Pituitary thyroid hormone abnormalities were detected mostly in males (p<0.05). As people age, total serum T3 (r=-0.103, p<0.01), T4 (r=-0.196, p<0.01) declined whereas TSH (r=0.144, p<0.01) increased due to negative feedback mechanism. We observed relation between local landscape feature and thyroid gland hormone level which results showed there is significant difference (p<0.01). Linear regression is used to study relation between pituitary-thyroid hormones, ages and region. The consequent result shows that gender is the factor of decreased T4 (β=0.155, p<0.01) levels. Moreover, changed region affects serum T4 (β=0.418, p<0.01) and T3 (β=0.310, p<0.00) levels.
CONCLUSION
Thyroid gland’s function is decreased by aging process and thyroid hormones level decrease, thus hormones abnormalities were detected mostly in males. Landscape difference such as ecological factors are presenting to reduction of pituitary thyroid gland function which can affect aging process inconveniently.
