Background: Deva-5 is used to cure infectious heat in traditional medicine.
Deva-5 is composed from 5 herbs including Gentiana decumbens L., Terminalia
Chebula Retz., Polygonium bistorta L., Momordica cochinchinensis Lour., and
Chiazospermum erectum Bernh. The aim of this study was to examine the antiinflammatory
and antipyretic effects of the Deva-5.
Methods: The anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated in following animal
models: xylene-induced ear edema in mice, cotton pellet-induced granuloma in
rats, and saccharomyces cerevisiae (Brewer’s yeast)-induced fever in rats. The
experimental animals were divided into four groups of six animals in each. Of
which, the Deva-5 group were administered infusium of Deva-5 (100 and 200 mg/
kg. po), the standard drug group were given indomethacin (1.44mg/kg.po) and
paracetamol (100 mg/kg.po, add in fever model), while the control group were
administered saline (8mg/kg. po).
Results: Deva-5 at the dose of 200 mg/kg and indomethacin significantly
reduced the ear edema at 60 min after the xylene application from control values of
561±0.12 μm to 418±0.73 μm, and 396±0.84 μm respectively. Ninety min after the
xylene application Deva-5 of 200 mg/kg and indomethacin significantly reduced
the ear edema from control values of 496±0.11 μm to 360±0.03 μm, and 366±0.07
μm respectively. Deva-5 of 100 mg/kg had not significantly reduced the ear edema.
The oral administration of Deva-5 at the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly
reduced the weight of granuloma induced by cotton pellet from control values of
48.5±9.4 mg to inhibition of 29.8% (34.0±4.3 mg), 39.7% (29.2±3.9 mg) and
42.2% (28.0±1.7 mg) respectively (p<0.05). The body temperature of rats had
significantly reduced after 4 hours of Deva-5 administration at the concentration
of 100 mg/kg, while it significantly reduced after 2 hours at its concentration
of 200 mg/kg. Indomethacin and paracetamol had significantly reduced yeastinduced
body temperature of rats at 4 and 1 hour after the treatment. (p<0.05)
Conclusion: The above mentioned results indicate that Deva-5 has inhibitory
effect on acute and chronic inflammation and fever.
